James Demers is a seasoned facilitator, strategist, and 2SLGBTQIA+ diversity educator with over 16 years of experience in community building and 12 years in the non-profit sector.
As a Senior Strategist & Trainer at CEC, James has educated clients on DEI concepts, gender and sexual diversity, and more. He is known for tackling challenging topics to support clients in their learning journeys. With over 10 years as a professional facilitator and 2SLGBTQIA+ diversity educator, and 16 years as a community builder, James brings depth, clarity, and compassion to every conversation.
He has facilitated learning with over 300 teams across government, corporate, academic, non-profit, unionized, and non-unionized sectors—often in rooms where participants may feel uncertain, disengaged, or resistant. His strength lies in meeting learners where they are, creating space for honest dialogue, and fostering psychological safety in high-stakes settings.
Prior to joining CEC, James served as a Health Policy and Advocacy Consultant for Alberta Health Services, where he contributed to shaping inclusive healthcare policy as a member of the LGBTQ+ Committee. He also played a key role in curriculum development at the Foothills School of Medicine, focusing on the healthcare needs of transgender patients and advancing health equity in medical education.
James previously led MAX Ottawa as Executive Director, supporting the health and wellness of queer men, trans, and non-binary communities. His work has taken him across sectors and across borders, with deep roots in Treaty 7 Territory (Mo’kinsis/Calgary).
Beyond his professional work, James is a trans activist, athlete, public speaker, performer, and proud drag producer with the collective Fake Mustache. He’s also a devoted bunny dad. Throughout his career, James has remained committed to uplifting LGBTQ+ voices and building bridges of understanding across differences.
