What is the state of DEI in Canada?

Looking beyond the headlines in the U.S.

If you’ve been following the news lately, you’ve probably seen a flood of articles claiming that “DEI is dead” or that diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives are in rapid decline. The overwhelming majority of this coverage is coming out of the United States, where anti-DEI legislation, lawsuits, and political rhetoric are reshaping the corporate and higher education landscape.

Here’s the catch: these stories, and the statistics backing them up, are overwhelmingly American. They do not reflect the Canadian experience.

In Canada, we don’t have robust, timely, and comprehensive data on the state of DEI across workplaces. Without it, we risk letting U.S. narratives shape our understanding of what’s actually happening here. Are organizations in Canada scaling back DEI? Are they doubling down? Are employees seeing meaningful change? We can’t answer these questions without evidence.

That’s why Canadian Equality Consulting has launched the first-of-its-kind national survey: The State of DEI in Canada.

This survey is designed to capture an accurate picture of what DEI looks like across Canadian workplaces in 2025. It’s comprehensive, evidence-based, and takes just 10–15 minutes to complete. The survey is open until September 26, and the results will be shared publicly in a summary report this fall.

If you’re working in Canada, your voice matters. By participating, you’ll help create the first national benchmark of DEI efforts in Canadian organizations—a tool that will move the conversation from assumptions and imported narratives to evidence and action rooted in our own context.

We’re excited to share what we learn, and we look forward to sparking more informed conversations about the future of DEI in Canada.
