There was a time when wearable technology belonged firmly to the realm of science fiction. Early iterations of smart glasses, most notably Google Glass, generated considerable excitement but ultimately failed to achieve widespread adoption. Their futuristic appearance, high cost, and public concerns about privacy earned them as much criticism as admiration. More than a decade later, however, the conversation has fundamentally changed.

Today’s AI-powered smart glasses are no longer experimental prototypes designed for technology enthusiasts. They are increasingly sophisticated consumer products that combine cameras, microphones, speakers, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and internet connectivity into what appears to be an ordinary pair of glasses. Companies such as Meta have partnered with popular brands like Ray-Ban to design eyewear that blends seamlessly into everyday life, while celebrity collaborations including Kylie Jenner’s promotion of Meta’s smart glasses have further positioned wearable AI as both a lifestyle accessory and a fashion statement.

The significance of smart glasses is not simply that they represent another technological innovation. Rather, they signal a profound change in how surveillance, artificial intelligence, and data collection are becoming integrated into everyday human interaction. Unlike smartphones, which are intentionally removed from a pocket before taking a photograph or recording a conversation, wearable AI devices are designed to be worn continuously. Cameras, microphones, voice assistants, and AI capabilities become embedded into routine social encounters, often becoming virtually invisible to those around them.

As these devices move from industrial settings into mainstream consumer culture, organizations face an entirely new challenge. One that extends well beyond technology implementation.

Consumer Wearable AI Is Entering the Workplace

The conversation is often framed around whether service or policing organizations should adopt smart glasses. Yet for many employers, that is unlikely to be the immediate issue. Most Canadian organizations are not preparing to purchase wearable AI for their workforce tomorrow. A far more realistic scenario is that employees, managers, consultants, contractors, customers, or visitors will begin arriving at work already wearing them.

Rather than asking whether the organization should deploy wearable AI, leaders will increasingly need to ask how they should respond when wearable AI enters the workplace through personal consumer devices. In many respects, smart glasses resemble the evolution of smartphones and smartwatches. Individuals purchase them for personal convenience, taking photographs, listening to music, navigating directions, translating languages, or interacting with generative AI, and naturally continue wearing them throughout the day, including at work. Few users may pause to consider that the same device capable of helping them navigate a city can also record confidential conversations, capture sensitive documents, identify faces, or collect behavioural and biometric information.

This represents a subtle but significant transformation in workplace privacy.

How AI Smart Glasses Change Workplace Privacy

Historically, workplace surveillance was largely organizational. Security cameras, electronic monitoring software, building access systems, and computer activity tracking were introduced, governed, and controlled by employers. Employees generally understood when surveillance technologies existed because organizations implemented them directly.

Wearable AI changes that relationship. Surveillance capabilities are no longer confined to institutional infrastructure; they become decentralized, portable, and personal. Cameras, microphones, location tracking, and AI assistants are increasingly carried by individuals themselves. In many ways, society is witnessing the consumerization of surveillance, where technologies capable of recording, analyzing, and interpreting human interactions are normalized not through government or corporate mandates, but through convenience, fashion, and popular culture.

For workplace leaders, this presents an entirely new governance challenge.

Imagine a manager conducting a performance review while wearing AI-enabled glasses. Consider a lawyer meeting with a client, a physician consulting with a patient, an engineer discussing proprietary designs, or an HR professional facilitating a harassment investigation. Even if no recording occurs, the simple possibility that conversations could be captured, transcribed, analyzed, or stored may fundamentally alter human behaviour.

Organizational psychology has long demonstrated that people modify their behaviour when they believe they are being observed. Employees become more cautious, less willing to admit mistakes, less likely to challenge authority, and more hesitant to share dissenting opinions. Psychological safety, the belief that one can speak openly without fear of embarrassment, punishment, or negative consequences, depends heavily upon trust.

Employees rarely evaluate new technologies solely through the lens of legal compliance. Instead, they ask more fundamental questions. Why is this technology here? Who has access to the information it collects? Could it be used to evaluate my performance? Will confidential conversations remain confidential? Can clients, patients, or colleagues trust that sensitive discussions are truly private?

These questions reveal an important truth: privacy is not merely a legal issue. It is a cultural one. This is precisely why Canadian employers should approach wearable AI through both legal and leadership lenses.

The Legal and Privacy Obligations Canadian Employers Should Know

Recent legal analysis from Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG) highlights that organizations must carefully evaluate privacy, employment, occupational health and safety, cybersecurity, accessibility, and human rights obligations. The analysis emphasizes that while wearable AI offers significant opportunities, including hands-free training, remote collaboration, operational efficiency, and accessibility, it also introduces complex legal responsibilities regarding the collection, use, storage, and protection of personal information.

Canadian privacy legislation reinforces these obligations. Under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), organizations engaged in commercial activities are responsible for ensuring that personal information is collected only for purposes that a reasonable person would consider appropriate under the circumstances. They must limit collection to what is necessary, obtain meaningful consent where required, safeguard personal information, remain accountable for its protection, and maintain transparency regarding how information is collected and used.

These principles become particularly important when wearable technologies may collect photographs, audio recordings, location information, behavioural patterns, or biometric information, not only from employees, but also from clients, customers, contractors, and members of the public who may never realize they have been captured.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has similarly cautioned organizations that biometric information should be treated as highly sensitive personal information because of its permanence and potential consequences if compromised. Facial characteristics, voice patterns, eye movements, and other biometric identifiers processed through artificial intelligence present privacy risks that extend beyond traditional workplace technologies. The Commissioner encourages organizations to begin with a simple but powerful question: Is this technology necessary, or could the same objective be achieved through a less privacy-intrusive alternative?

This concept, sometimes referred to as privacy by design, encourages organizations to build privacy considerations into technology decisions from the outset, rather than attempting to address them after implementation.

Why Trust Matters More Than Technology

Yet legal compliance alone is unlikely to determine whether wearable AI succeeds in the workplace. As with many workplace challenges, governance frameworks are only effective when leaders are accountable for how they are implemented in practice. Strong leadership accountability creates the transparency and trust employees need when organizations introduce new technologies.

The organizations that will navigate this transition most successfully will be those that recognize trust as a strategic asset rather than merely a legal obligation. Employees are far more likely to embrace innovation when they understand why new technologies are being introduced, what information is being collected, who will have access to it, how long it will be retained, and what safeguards exist to protect them. Transparency reduces uncertainty. Consultation builds ownership. Clear governance strengthens confidence.

Preparing Your Organization for Wearable AI

Even organizations that never issue a single pair of smart glasses to employees should begin considering how wearable AI fits within their broader governance framework. Existing policies addressing confidentiality, acceptable technology use, workplace recording, AI governance, cybersecurity, and privacy may require updating to reflect technologies that simply did not exist when many policies were drafted. Leaders may also need guidance on how to respond if employees wear AI-enabled devices during confidential meetings, disciplinary conversations, negotiations, client consultations, or other sensitive interactions.

At the same time, organizations must avoid simplistic solutions. A blanket prohibition on wearable AI may appear attractive, but it risks overlooking the significant accessibility benefits these technologies can provide. AI-powered smart glasses are already helping individuals who are blind or have low vision navigate environments, read printed text, recognize objects, translate languages, and participate more independently in the workplace. For some employees, these devices may function not as luxury gadgets but as assistive technologies that support inclusion and accommodation under Canadian human rights legislation.

This illustrates the complexity of the challenge facing modern organizations.

The future of wearable AI cannot be reduced to a binary choice between innovation and privacy. Nor can it be framed simply as a debate over surveillance versus convenience. Rather, it requires thoughtful leadership capable of balancing innovation, accessibility, confidentiality, employee trust, privacy rights, organizational risk, and legal compliance simultaneously.

Ultimately, the emergence of AI-powered smart glasses represents something much larger than the arrival of another consumer device. It signals the beginning of a new era in which artificial intelligence becomes physically embedded within everyday human relationships. The boundaries between digital technology and face-to-face interaction are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish. The workplace, once a relatively controlled technological environment, is becoming populated by personal devices that organizations neither purchased nor fully govern.

Technology will continue to evolve at remarkable speed. Fashion and consumerism will accelerate its adoption. Artificial intelligence will become increasingly invisible, intuitive, and integrated into daily life.

Trust, however, evolves much more slowly.

The organizations that thrive in this new era will be those that recognize that every technological decision is also a human one. They will understand that privacy is more than compliance, governance is more than policy, and innovation is meaningful only when it strengthens, not weakens, the trust upon which every healthy workplace ultimately depends.
