DEI Calendar for February 2025

Black History Month

Black history refers to the stories, experiences, and accomplishments of Black people. Black History Month is an annual commemoration in February to remember the many achievements and contributions of Black people throughout history. It has been observed in Canada since 1976. For 2025, the Black History Month theme, ‘Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations,’ exploring the many ways in which Black individuals have built our country and created a long legacy for future generations.

World Hijab Day – February 1

World Hijab Day is an annual event to raise awareness about the hijab (headscarf) and dismantle stereotypes associated with Muslim women who choose to wear it.It highlights religious expression, promoting diversity, and encouraging dialogue among people of all faiths and backgrounds.

Rosa Parks Day (U.S.) – February 4

Rosa Parks Day is observed in California and Missouri on February 4 and Alabama and Ohio on December 1. It is an American observance to honour civil rights activist Rosa Parks, a civil rights leader and key figure in the Montgomery bus boycott.

International Day of Zero Tolerance For Female Genital Mutilation – February 6

The day provides an avenue for all stakeholders to speak up against the harmful effects of FGM and reaffirm their commitment to fighting the practice.

Canadian Sexual and Reproductive Health Day – February 12

Canadian Sexual and Reproductive Health Day is observed annually to raise awareness of the importance of sexual and reproductive health and provide resources to improve healthcare across the Canadian community.

Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week – February 16-22

This is an annual, internationally recognized event that is dedicated to creating awareness and acceptance of the aromantic people and highlighting the challenges they face.

World Day of Social Justice – February 20

World Day of Social Justice is observed to acknowledge the plight of social injustices across communities and to press relevant stakeholders for solutions, including better services and improvements on those in existence.

Anti-Bullying Day – February 26

Also known as Pink Shirt Day, the day is celebrated to raise awareness against bullying, particularly in schools, and funds to facilitate championing anti-bullying initiatives.
