December is an opportunity for reflection, celebration and action for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives as we approach year end. DEI Calendar for December 2024

December 1: World AIDS Day

First commemorated in 1988, the World AIDS Day is dedicated to supporting people living with HIV/AIDS and championing the eradication of the disease through scientific innovations and the stigma that surrounds it.

December 2: International Day For The Abolition Of Slavery

The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery focuses on eradicating modern day slavery practices such as human and sex trafficking, child labor, and forced marriages.

December 3: International Day for Persons with Disability

This day seeks to reinforce that disability is not inability by raising awareness of the rights and liberties of people living with disabilities globally.

December 5: International Volunteer Day

This day highlights the importance of volunteer work to ensure people are part of the solution and its recognizes its value in promoting peace and development.

December 6: National Day of Remembrance and Action on violence Against Women

Informally known as White Ribbon Day, this day urges us to remember the women who lost their lives in acts of misogyny in Montreal in 1989, and by extension, women that continue to lose their lives due to violence.

December 8: Pansexual Pride Day

Pansexual pride day is an important annual event to the pansexual community through which they broaden their visibility, recognize and celebrate their identity and advocate for inclusivity.

December 10: International Human Rights Day

International Human Rights Day marks its 75th anniversary since its declaration by the UN General Assembly this year. The day commemorates the adoption of the universal declaration of human rights, which continue to form a base for international human rights laws.

December 18: International Migrants Day

The day is celebrated in honour of migrants who play an integral role in the development of the international community. In addition, the day sets to raise awareness on the challenges and difficulties migrants face while advocating for their humane conditions and treatment.

December 20: International Human Solidarity Day

This day serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and solidarity between nations, and communities for the achievement of common goals like the realization of peace, and sustainable development.
